Venue Spotlight – The Orange Peel – Asheville, North Carolina

The Orange Peel located in Asheville, North Carolina is a music venue with a capacity of 1,100 individuals. Rolling Stones named it one of the top music venues in America in 2008, only six years after it was opened. It has also been featured in Travel and Leisure Magazine, USA Today, Southern Living Magazine, Self Magazine, Turner South Cable Network, Cosmopolitan, and GQ.

Downstairs is a members-only bar that holds another 75 people and is open every night that there is a show. This is called Pulp. A live feed is available for the occupants to view and listen to whatever show may be occurring above them.

A Brief History

Many well known acts have performed here including The Smashing Pumpkins, the Beastie Boys, Lauryn Hill, Megadeth, Bassnectar, The Glitch Mob, Queens of the Stone Age, Skillex, Mastodon, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Pretty Lights, Modest Mouse, Ice Cube, The Black Keys, Deadmau5, the Flaming Lips, Ben Harper, Spoon, Blondie, Sonic Youth, Arcade Fire, Damien Rice, My Morning Jacket, Joan Jett, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Goodie M.O.B., Cyndi Lauper, Lucinda Williams, and Bob Dylan.

It not only is a place for concerts, but benefits, birthday parties, galas, weddings, and memorial services are also held here.

Events planned in June, 2013 included a showing of The Big Lebowski on June 3rd, Social Distortion, Cheap Time, and Dave Hause on June 5th, Pro Wrestling, Ivan the Terribles, and The Go-Devils on June 7th, Family Yoga on June 8th, Laughing Skull Lounge Take Over Show on June 8th, Waltz Night on June 9th, Dawes, Shovels  and Rope on June 11th, Foals, Surfer Blood, and Blondfire on June 12th, John McLaughlin on June 13th, Leo Kottle on June 14th.

On June 15th, Zyndeco Night and Zydeco Ya Ya on June 16th, Slice of Life Comedy Open Mic on June 20th, Shooter Jennings on June 21st, DJ DVBBS on June 22nd, Jamey Johnson and Amanda Watkins on June 27th, Ice Cube and The Soul Rebels on June 28th, Trial By Fire, a Tribute to Journey on June 29th, and Jump Sessions on June 30th.

July shows will include another showing of Jump Sessions on July 1st, Andrew McMahon and Allen Stone on July 12th, Ralphie May on July 13th, Souls of Mischief on July 14th, Toad The Wet Sprocket and Lee DeWyze on July 15th, Architecture Between Mountain and Valley and Marlon Blackwell on July 17th, ZOSO on July 18th, Appetite for Destruction, Red, White, and Crue, and Poison’d on July 20th, Yacht Rock Revue on July 26th, and Pentatonix on July 28th.

August will bring PANTyRAiD on August 3rd, El-P, Killer Mike, Despot, and Kool A.D. on August 8th, Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers on August 9th, Icona Pop, K-Flay, and Sirah on August 12th, Mastadon, ASG, and US Chistmas on August 14th, and One More Time on August 28th.

In September, City and Colour and Lucy Rose will be performing on the 26th, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band on the 27th, Anni DiFranco on the 28th, and Walk the Moon on the 29th. Shuggie Otis will be playing on October 9th.
